The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is a nonprofit corporation which is neither an agency nor establishment of the United States Government but funded by the federal government. PCORI was authorized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.  The mission of PCORI is to help people make informed health care decisions, and improve health care delivery and outcomes, by producing and promoting high integrity, evidence-based information  that comes from research guided by patients, caregivers and the broader health care community.

On May 21, 2012, PCORI adopted its National Priorties for Research and Research Agenda.  The five priorities outlined in this document were: 1) Assessment of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options; 2) Improving healthcare systems; 3) Communication and dissemination research; 4) Addressing disparities, and 5) Accelerating patient-centered outcomes research and methodological research.

On May 22, 2012, PCORI announced $120 million in funding for comparative clinical effectiveness research.
